Brett Forrest Match Report - Danderhall Miners

Edinburgh South v Danderhall

Edinburgh South marked their final home game of the season with an emphatic 10-0 win over Danderhall on Sunday.

The victory sets up a showdown against Glenrothes in the final match, with the top two teams in the SWFL East going head-to-head for the honour of being crowned champions AND a place in the promotion play-offs.

On a sweltering afternoon at Holy Rood, South’s largest attendance of the season - including the raucous support of the club’s under-8 girls, who acted as mascots - crowded together on the hill to watch what they hoped would be an entertaining match to sign off at Holyrood on a high. And that is exactly what they got.

By half-time the home side were five goals up thanks to goals from Robyn Fleming, Erin McComisky, Elise McCormack (2), and an Eilidh Buchanan header from a corner - who seems to be getting a taste for them, with this now being her third corner goal in three games.

The second half saw another five goals scored but in a different manner. A penalty nine minutes in saw centre-half McCormick complete her hat trick.

South then made a series of substitutions that, inevitably, disrupted the flow against determined opposition eager to put in challenges all over the park. Former South starter Ella Brown was booked, possibly a little unfortunately, for catching the referee’s eye just once too often.

It took the home side until the closing five minutes to get the rewards for their domination, as they rattled in four goals in a quickfire spell. Under-18 graduate Cassie Lorimer had the crowd – and the entire bench – on their feet with a quickfire double, before imposing striker Anna Hume was finally rewarded for her tireless running all afternoon.

New signing Maria Christensen, who played as a trialist the previous weekend, was another popular scorer as she bagged a first goal for the club in the closing moments.

South move on to face Strollers on the grass pitch in Glenrothes, knowing that a win will secure the championship for a team who only head their first training session in early 2022. Against opponents who only need a point to clinch the league crown, the stakes could hardly be higher for TWO teams who deserve to be much further up the Scottish Women’s Football pyramid.
