A dramatic afternoon ends with South taking all three points in a thrilling contest.

The visitors struck early after just two minutes when a break down the wing saw the ball flashed across the box. The first effort crashed off the bar before Mason Renton reacted quickest to turn home the rebound. Edinburgh University continued to threaten in the opening stages, but several excellent saves from Youssi Bejaoui kept South firmly in the contest.

South grew into the game and found a crucial equaliser just before the break in the 43rd minute. Stuart Martin played the ball into Kenny O’Brien, who showed great strength to hold off his man before rolling him and driving across goal, his effort squeezing past the keeper.

However, the visitors responded immediately. In added time at the end of the first half, Samuel Whitehead rose highest from a delivery into the box and powered his header goalward to restore Edinburgh University’s lead going into the interval.

With the conditions playing their part, South came out for the second half with renewed intent and began to take control of the game. Their pressure paid off when Kenny O’Brien slipped Murray Connolly through on goal, and Muzz kept his composure to run beyond the defence and slot home a calm left footed finish to level the match once again.

The drama wasn’t finished there. In the closing stages, makeshift centre back Yassine surged forward from deep, gaining valuable ground and keeping the students pinned back. The ball eventually found Max Clark, whose powerful strike was brilliantly saved by the Uni goalkeeper, but the clearance only reached Cammy Young. Inspired by Yassine’s forward run, Young drove down the left and delivered a superb cross back into the box where Max Clark rose highest to head home the winner in the 90th minute.

A brilliant comeback and a huge three points for South. ⚽💪
